Finding your investing guru - Fortune Features

Want to know what Warren Buffett's buying? Or any other major stock player? One small investor has a site for you.

By Scott Cendrowski, reporter

FORTUNE -- Like many people, Charlie Tian loaded up on tech stocks in the '90s. A scientist at Fujitsu, he thought he knew the sector. Then the market crash proved he didn't. Tian, 43, figured there was a better way for small investors. He started reading Warren Buffett's annual letters back to 1972 and thought, "If I select the stocks he already owns, my risk will be much smaller." Tian launched Gurufocus.com, a website tracking the holdings of about 50 great investors, from Buffett to hedge funder David Tepper. More recently Tian has hired analysts and begun building stocks-election programs that emulate the investors. One screen is inspired by value legend Benjamin Graham; another by Buffett. In recent months the latter screen turned up Archer Daniels Midland (ADM), General Dynamics (GD), and McDonald's (MCD). Tian's work got an unintentional endorsement in July when Buffett told an interviewer that ADM and General Dynamics are the kinds of companies he'd consider buying.

Rapper could face charges tied to flash mob calls (omg!)

LOS ANGELES - A rapper could face criminal charges after a tweet from his account incited a telephone flash mob that overwhelmed the emergency phone system at one of busiest stations of the Los Angeles County sheriff's department, the agency said Saturday.

The sheriff's department alleges The Game tweeted the Compton station's phone number Friday and told his 580,000 followers to call the number if they wanted an internship.

Phones at the southeast Los Angeles County station started ringing at 5:23 p.m. Friday, and the lines were jammed by hundreds of calls for more than two hours, prompting authorities to bring in additional help. Many callers hung up as soon as someone answered, while others asked deputies about a music internship.

During that time people with legitimate issues that included a missing person, spousal abuse and two robberies were also trying to call in, department spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

Sheriff's Capt. Mike Parker said that when authorities finally figured out what had happened, he sent two tweets to the rapper asking him to take down the number. Instead, Parker said, The Game posted that his account had been hacked and also tweeted that it was an accident.

"Yall can track a tweet down but cant solve murders!" the tweet said. "Dat was an accident but maybe now yall can actually do yall job !!!!"

A call and email to The Game's publicist, Greg Miller at Big Hassle Media, was not immediately returned.

The rapper finally took down the number around 11 p.m. Friday after a third request from Parker, who took particular issue with the accusation that deputies are not doing their job.

"Under the LA county sheriffs we've reduce homicides in Compton by over 50 percent in recent years and crime is down in Compton, but it's particularly helpful when the public can contact us," Parker said Saturday in a phone interview with The Associated Press. "This incident was the social media equivalent of going into a crowded movie theater and shouting 'Fire!'"

Investigators will document what happened, how many calls flooded the station, the rapper's tweets and other information, and will turn it over to the district attorney's office next week, Parker said. The rapper could face charges of maliciously disrupting or impeding communications over a public safety radio frequency, obstruction of justice or other charges related to delaying a peace officer from doing their job.

"Public safety was absolutely compromised," Parker said. "We were delayed in responding to calls."

The Game is a California-based rapper whose real name is Charles Louboutin, the sheriff's office said in a release.

His 2005 debut album, "The Documentary," entered the charts at the top and sold 586,000 units in the first week, according to his website. The rapper, who grew up in Compton, has collaborated with famed rappers including Dr. Dre, Kanye West and 50 Cent.

Authentium Reports Computer Virus Outbreaks Doubling Every Twelve Months

West Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) August 29, 2005

Authentium, Inc., the world?s leading end point security technology aggregator and integrator, and developer of the Authentium Extensible Security Platform, today announced that their computer virus database protection list now contains identifying data on more than 200,000 individual computer viruses.

?Our analysis confirms that the number of viruses in circulation has doubled every twelve months, every year for the past fifteen years,? said Robert Sandilands, head of the Authentium Virus Research Lab. ?Back in 1991, there were less than 200 viruses worldwide. This week, the number of separately identified threats in our database reached 201,554. At this rate the number of computer viruses will hit one million by 2008, and five million by 2010.?

The Authentium Virus Research Lab database, a collection of virus definitions or ?signatures?, is updated whenever a new threat is found ? often within minutes of the outbreak ? by a team of researchers and analysts spanning the globe. Authentium?s list of viruses easily outpaces many of its better-known competitors, such as McAfee (130,000), and Symantec (70,000), the maker of Norton Antivirus.????

?You can?t just concentrate just on the viruses you hear about on the evening news,? said John Sharp, Authentium?s Chairman & CEO. ?We find a surprisingly high number of computer infections result from viruses introduced into the world years ago. With over 200,000 virus signatures, Authentium now casts the widest safety net in the antivirus business. Our customers are some of the biggest mail service providers, security software developers, and Internet Service Providers in the world. They, and their customers, expect full protection.?

According to recent FBI and Computer Science Institute reports and other industry analysts, an increasing number of computer viruses and other threats, such as spyware, are being produced by organized crime organizations. Many threats now present themselves to organizations as ?blended threats,? and combine stealthy behavior along with advanced virus, spyware, Trojan, spamming, and phishing techniques.

Authentium has developed a range of integrated applications and techniques designed to protect against these emerging blended threats, including sophisticated heuristic techniques, end point threat emulation, and service hardening technology, which provides protection against threats designed to target antivirus scanning engines.

Two weeks ago, Authentium?s Command Antivirus technology was 100% successful in blocking the widely-reported Zotob threat, responsible for attacks on CNN, ABC, and other large news organizations, prior to its identification. None of Authentium?s customers reported infections.

?To catch a problem like Zotob and stop it infecting an organization, having the largest database working for you is a great start?, stated Mr. Sandilands. ?However, to ensure full protection, you need frequent updates, you need great heuristics, and you need end point service hardening. In that sense, nothing about this business has changed ? preparation is still the most important thing. In fact, it is everything.?

About Authentium, Inc.

Italy to slash political jobs in new austerity (AP)

ROME ? Italy's government vowed Saturday that its new austerity package will slash the country's huge bureaucratic costs, with thousands of jobs and local elected posts being gradually eliminated as small towns consolidate.

Premier Silvio Berlusconi has even called the cuts "excessive," but said they were approved because of widespread discontent among citizens over the perks enjoyed by Italy's political elite.

The government on Friday approved the euro45.5 billion ($64.8 billion) in emergency measures over two years to balance the budget by 2013 in response to demands by the European Central Bank. The package ? a mix of spending cuts and tax increases, including a "solidarity tax" for high-earners ? aims to calm market turmoil and make sure Italy is not the next victim of Europe's debt crisis.

Italy is expected to grow only by about 1 percent this year and has one of the highest debts in the 17-nation eurozone. The European Central Bank last week began buying Italian and Spanish bonds to try to stop those countries' borrowing costs from soaring.

Cabinet Minister Roberto Calderoli said Saturday the number of national lawmakers, currently almost 1,000, would be halved ? though this requires a lengthy constitutional process.

He said provincial administrations for towns with less than 300,000 people or smaller than 3,000 sq. kilometers (1,160 sq. miles) will be abolished. Provincial administrations ? in-between municipalities and regions ? are seen by many as redundant and expensive.

While the exact number will be determined by a fall census, the measure is expected to affect between 29 and 35 provincial governments, Calderoli said. Newspaper La Repubblica said these include Siena, Trieste and Prato, an important business center outside Florence.

Towns with fewer than 1,000 residents will merge with larger communities, a change that affects about 1,970 out of Italy's 8,094 municipalities, according to the government.

These cuts mean about 5,000 elected jobs will be slashed, plus several thousand related jobs, Calderoli said. The measures take effect at the next local elections.

The issue of excessive administration has been a mainstay of the Italian political debate for years. But citizens have expressed new outrage recently that Italy's political class has spared itself from cuts it demanded of others.

Some critics said the measures didn't go far enough, others said they targeted mostly local administrations.

However, national lawmakers saw their "solidarity tax" double compared to other citizens, who face a 5 percent additional tax on income above euro90,000 ($128,250) and a 10 percent additional tax on income above euro150,000 ($213,750).

Lawmakers already passed a euro70 billion ($99 billion) austerity package last month, but the financial situation has deteriorated significantly since then. Under intense pressure from the European Central Bank and eurozone leaders, the government agreed to speed its goal of balancing the budget to 2013 instead of 2014, and to come up with structural reforms that stimulate investment and growth.

The news measures were passed in an emergency decree approved by the Cabinet. The decree is effective immediately but must be turned into law by parliament within 60 days.

It includes plans for the liberalization of local services, such as trash collection or transport. It also seeks to open up the country's rigid labor market by allowing more room for direct negotiations between companies and unions in areas now regulated by the national contract. It promises to crack down on businesses or professionals who do not issue a receipt _a practice so common that customers now are sometimes offered either a discount or the receipt.

But it's not clear whether the package does enough to stimulate Italy's stagnant economy. Italian Finance Minister Giulio Tremonti said the economic impact of these reforms might be significant but for now Italy is not revising its economic growth forecasts.

FBI aids Aruba investigation into missing American (AP)

ORANJESTAD, Aruba ? Aruba has turned to the FBI for help investigating the disappearance of 35-year-old Robyn Gardner of Maryland, an agency spokesman said Thursday, as official doubts grew about the story told by the suspect in the case.

FBI Special Agent Richard Wolf told The Associated Press that the U.S. agency is conducting interviews and giving other assistance to Aruba, which is taking the lead in the investigation. He declined to provide details or say who was being interviewed.

Gardner was reported missing on Aug. 2 by traveling companion Gary V. Giordano, who is also from Maryland. The 50-year-old man told police Gardner disappeared while they were snorkeling off the southern tip of the Caribbean island.

Aruban Solicitor General Taco Stein said earlier that police had detained Giordano because of seeming inconsistencies in his version of events. And on Thursday he said that if Gardner had drowned where Giordano had said, "We think that her body would have surfaced by now.

"We know the spot where he said she must have drowned. We have searched there extensively and in view of the weather situation we are almost certain that the body would have come to the surface," Stein said.

He said it was also possible that Giordano had told police to search in the wrong spot.

He said there were no unusual currents on Aug. 2, when Gardner disappeared. "The water was very calm and clear ... The search took place all the way to Venezuela."

Giordano's Aruban lawyer, Michael Lopez, insists his client is innocent and is being unjustly detained. "There is no concrete or direct indication that our client might be involved in any illicit act concerning his friend."

While Gardner's tattoos may have been wild and rowdy, a close friend described her as a kind, quiet and trusting woman who sought solace in a tropical getaway with a man who is now suspected in her disappearance, a close friend said.

The 35-year-old divorced woman accepted Giordano's offer of a trip to Aruba despite earlier backing out of a cruise with the man she'd been friends with for over a year, Gardner's friend and part-time roommate Christina Jones said Wednesday.

"She's a very trusting person," Jones said at her hair salon in downtown Frederick, Maryland. "She's a hardworking, loyal, standup female who has never said anything bad about anyone."

Gardner's mother, Andrea Colson, said the family is hoping for the best outcome, praying Robyn will be with them soon and grateful to Aruban authorities and volunteers.

"I hope you understand that we are being quiet as to not jeopardize the investigation," Colson said in a statement released by the Natalee Holloway Resource Center, a Virginia-based missing persons group named for a young Alabama woman who vanished on Aruba in 2005.

Photos on a "help find Robyn" Facebook page feature Gardner's body ink, including a jungle-print design on her left shoulder and a Latin phrase tattooed over her right ribcage. Translated, it reads, "If I can't move the earth then I'll raise hell."

But the pretty, 5-foot-5-inch blonde was more reserved than the pictures suggest, according to Jones and to Gardner's on-again-off-again boyfriend, Richard Forester of Rockville.

At Forester's home, where she often stayed, she took care of two cats, Kobe and Toonsy, and relaxed by watching travel and food shows on TV, he said.

She also enjoyed watching the "Real Housewives of New Jersey" and the "Real Housewives of New York," Forester said.

"She just liked the drama of it," he said.

Forester said in an interview on NBC's "Today" show Thursday that Gardner posted a message on his Facebook wall about 2 a.m. on Aug. 2 saying "this sucks," but with no explanation. He said he emailed her throughout the day, and she responded that afternoon to say that she loved him and that they would sort things out when she returned.

Jones told the CBS "Early Show" that Giordano was a friend, not a boyfriend, of Gardner's and that the two had a "a bit of a roller-coaster" relationship. "Good one day, not so great the next," she said, adding she had only heard about Giordano through Gardner and never met the man herself.

A jogger and tennis player, Gardner also enjoyed traveling, whether to Florida, where her parents live, Las Vegas or Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach in Delaware, Forester said.

Gardner graduated from South Carroll High School in Sykesville in 1994. Forester said she had taken some college classes but didn't have a degree.

She was recently laid off from a dentist's office where she had worked scheduling patients, Forester said. She had also done some modeling, he said.

Giordano told police Gardner disappeared while snorkeling, but Forester, Jones and Gardner's brother Andrew Colson all said she wasn't usually that adventurous.

"Robyn's more of a lay-by-the-pool kind of gal," Jones said.

The prosecutor would not disclose their specific doubts, fearing it could undermine the investigation, but one of them is fairly basic: So far, there are no witnesses who saw the pair go snorkeling.

Giordano called police in Aruba around 6:30 p.m. that day to say he and Gardner got separated while snorkeling and she never made it back to shore. Video and photos obtained by the AP show him assisting police in a helicopter and boat search of the Dutch island's coastline.

Stein said police have the woman's computer, which they are considering sending to the Netherlands for analysis, and the couple's rental car, but no physical evidence of a crime.

The still-unsolved disappearance of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway during a high school class trip in 2005, put Aruba in an unwelcome spotlight. Her remains were never found and the main suspect, Joran van der Sloot, is in jail in Peru on charges of killing a 21-year-old woman there last May.

Holloway's mother, Beth Holloway, said Gardner's disappearance resonated with her. Losing a loved one in a foreign country with a different language and an unfamiliar judicial system is even more difficult.

"It's hard to know who to be connected to, the right resources, and how to make those resources go to work for your missing loved one," she said in an interview from New York.

"I know the challenges ahead of them are great," she said of Gardner's family.

Jones described Gardner on Facebook as her "kindred soul." She said friends and family members remain hopeful she will turn up. Meanwhile, she said, the family wishes journalists would respect their privacy and let investigators do their work.

(AP) ? Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday for sexually assaulting an underage follower he took as a bride in what his church deemed a "spiritual marriage."

The head of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints also received a 20-year sentence for the sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl.

He stood quietly Tuesday as the decision of the Texas jury was read, giving him the maximum sentence on both counts. They are to be served consecutively. Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark said the 55-year-old will be eligible for parole in 35 years.

Prosecutors had asked the jury for the life sentence after presenting their painstaking and sometimes graphic case, and rejected Jeffs' contention that he was being persecuted for his religious beliefs.

"The evidence in this case shows that this isn't a prosecution of a people," prosecutor Eric Nichols said in his closing argument. "This is a prosecution to protect people."

During the trial, prosecutors used DNA evidence to show Jeffs fathered a child with the 15-year-old and played an audio recording of what they said was him sexually assaulting the 12-year-old.

Jeffs, who had insisted on acting as his own attorney during the earlier part of the trial, was convicted Thursday.

He asked to be excused under protest during the sentencing phase, which ended Tuesday with him refusing to answer when the judge asked if he wanted to make a closing statement. A defense attorney told the judge Jeffs had instructed his attorneys not to speak for him.

Jurors deliberated less than half an hour.

During the trial, prosecutors played other tapes in which Jeffs was heard instructing as many as a dozen of his young wives on how to please him sexually ? and thus, he told them, please God.

"If the world knew what I was doing, they would hang me from the highest tree," Jeffs wrote in 2005, according to one of thousands of pages of notes seized along with the audio recordings from his Texas ranch.

Nichols referred to that in his closing.

"No, Mr. Jeffs, unlike what you wrote in your priesthood records ... we don't hang convicts anymore from the highest tree. Not even child molesters," Nichols said.

Jeffs claimed his religious rights were being violated. Representing himself after burning through seven high-powered attorneys, he routinely interrupted the proceedings and chose to stand silently in front of jurors for nearly half an hour during his closing arguments. He called just one defense witness, a church elder who read from Mormon scripture.

The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a radical offshoot of mainstream Mormonism that believes polygamy brings exaltation in heaven, has more than 10,000 followers who consider Jeffs to be God's spokesman on Earth.

He spent years evading arrest ? crisscrossing the country as a fugitive who eventually made the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list before his capture in 2006, said Nichols.

Police raided the group's remote West Texas ranch in April 2008, finding women dressed in frontier-style dresses and hairdos from the 19th century as well as seeing underage girls who were clearly pregnant. The call to an abuse hotline that spurred the raid turned out to be a hoax, and more than 400 children who had been placed in protective custody were eventually returned to their families.

Jeffs is the eighth FLDS man convicted since the raid on Yearning For Zion, in the town of Eldorado, 45 miles (72 kilometers) south of San Angelo. Previous sentences ranged from six to 75 years in prison.
