'Love My Pets GPS' Features a Dog GPS Safety System that May ...

(EMAILWIRE.COM, November 15, 2011 )
Ft. Myers, FL -- For a pet owner, there is nothing quite as worrisome as the realization that a beloved dog has escaped from the yard and is out wandering the neighborhood alone.

While many lost dogs do make it home again safely, sadly, some do not. Some may be taken in by another family who believes the dog has been abandoned and tragically, some end up being hit by a car. Still others are taken to shelters where they may eventually be reunited with their families, but only after a lot of stress and expense.

When a dog gets loose, time is of the essence. Pet owners need a way to find their lost four-legged friends and bring them back home as quickly and safely as possible.

A company has been receiving a lot of attention lately for its GPS Pet Safety Collar that gives pet owners the immediate ability to locate a missing pet through the use of state-of-the-art GPS technology and an online service. With its combination of reliability and low cost, the dog tracking collars are also used by police departments across the country.

Love My Pets GPS, a company based in Louisville, Kentucky features the revolutionary K9 tracker collars on its website, along with other pet supply products like high quality leashes and harnesses. The GPS dog tracker collar combines glow-in-the-dark banding and a material with one of the highest reflective values on the market along with an award-winning GPS unit that can locate and track both indoors and outside.

?A basic reason to use a GPS dog tracking system is to be able to find a dog that has become lost or injured,? an article on the company?s website explained.

?But a good tracking system can do much more, not only showing the exact location of the animal, but how far away it is from you, whether it is moving and how fast, and even what the dog is doing: running, or sitting.?

The website explained how the dog tracking system works: using the online service, a GPS map will show the pet?s location. If the pet owner is not near a computer, he or she can call a toll-free number, give the consultant a login and password, and after a brief conversation, be advised by phone where the pet is and which direction it is headed.

While the dog GPS tracking system is great for dogs who like to jump fences or otherwise escape from yards, it can also come in handy during a natural disaster if a pet becomes separated from home.

Android 4.0 code released as OS takeover continues (Appolicious)

As promised, Google has released Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich to the open source community. And as a bonus, the code encompasses the complete source code history tree, which includes Honeycomb?s line up as well. To be more specific, this is the source code for version 4.0.1 of Android, which is the version to ship on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Nexus. This is the first time both ICS and Honeycomb have been opened to developers, and the move reiterates Chairman Eric Schmidt?s statements during his tour of Asia this month that Android would remain an open, free platform.

Android only continues to enlarge its footprint, making its way to more than half of all smartphones sold in the third quarter of 2011. According to a recent Gartner report, Google Android accounted for 52.5 percent of smartphone sales, more than doubling its share from last year. The success can partially be attributed to Samsung as well, which had significant sales for its Android-powered devices in Q3. ?Android benefited from more mass-market offerings, a weaker competitive environment, and the lack of exciting new products on alternative operating systems,? Roberta Cozza, an analyst in Gartner?s European unit based in Egham, England, said in the report.

The ubiquity of Android

The environment is also ripe for Amazon?s Kindle Fire, which finally hits stores today. This dual-core Android tablet, priced under $200, is a highly anticipated consumer gadget that could, in some ways, rival the iPad. But it only comes with a couple thousand apps in the Amazon Appstore, leaving out the majority of the quarter-million apps found in the official Android Market. That doesn?t have to stop you, though. PC Magazine details how the Kindle Fire can install any app in the standard APK format, enabling you to load more than just the select apps Amazon?s pre-selected on your behalf.

But if it?s the non-Android Siri app you really desire, you may be able to get the popular iPhone app on your Android handset as well. Developer Applidium has reported that the security protocol enabling Siri to communicate with Apple servers and return information through speech recognition has been cracked. That means Android apps can be written using the actual Siri technology. While Apple could shut down any such Android app pretty quickly, the hack reveals the complex process behind Siri?s interactions, from its codex to its TCP connections. At the very least, we can all learn a little more about the AI platform that?s won the hearts of consumers and investors around the world.

Syfy Scare Tactics & Urban Legends Sneak Peeks (Videos)

Syfy Monday nights are full of scary, unusual, weird things and legends that may or may not have any truth to them. Yes I am talking about Syfy?s hit shows Scare Tactics and Urban Legends and you can get a sneak peek of tomorrow night?s shows right here, sweet! I love the Syfy channel. It recently has become one of my favorite channels thanks to their unique programming. It took me a while to get into their shows Scare Tactics and Urban Legends but I eventually came around and now I freaking love both shows. Seriously they rock! This week on Scare Tactics, hosted by Tracy Morgan, there is a man and woman who are given orders from a doctor via a computer screen, interesting and different I know. I could go on and describe word for word what happens but lets face it I would make it sound stupid. So how about you take a little look at the video to see just what fans are in store for. Then we have a little preview of Urban Legend and this one is a doozy. A woman named Jeannie?s husband seems to go missing when he is only eight blocks [...]

Whereas the last alternative, almost too grim to reflect upon, would be that of deliberate theft. In this scenario we encounter cannon fodder, fiddled casualty figures, falsified statistics and all the cynicism of wartime manipulation and propaganda. And again, nobody is on hand to represent the words of the victim. That is what happened to young John Kipling when he was posted ?missing? at the end of one of the fiercest early battles of the First World War. His father Rudyard, upset that the boy was disqualified for the military because of his poor eyesight, had in effect smuggled him through customs so as to pass the minimal regulations. His agony, therefore, as to having effectively cheated his boy into vanishing in the trenches, can only be dimly guessed at.

Romney readies Iowa ad as Cain, Perry address woes (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is preparing for a higher profile in Iowa, where he possibly could land a knockout punch if two top rivals don't quickly fix their campaign problems and back-of-the-pack contenders such as Newt Gingrich don't move quickly to energize voters.

Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, recently recorded a TV campaign ad at a sheet-metal plant in Dubuque, in eastern Iowa. It's not shocking that he would prepare such ads. But every Romney step in Iowa intrigues GOP activists.

After a crushingly disappointing loss there in 2008, he sharply lowered expectations in Iowa, whose caucus is less than two months away. If Romney airs ads soon and heavily in the state, it could signal a new strategy built on calculations that his weakened opponents handed him too tempting an opportunity.

But Romney retains the option of doing little in Iowa and keeping his main hopes pinned on New Hampshire. Its primary is Jan. 10, one week after the Iowa caucus.

While Romney spoke to voters in Michigan on Thursday, once-surging rivals Rick Perry and Herman Cain scrambled to control serious political damage. And party insiders speculated on whether Gingrich, a former House speaker, could emerge as the newest hope for conservative activists who question Romney's commitment to their priorities.

Gingrich, however, trails Romney and others in organizing Iowa and other key states. And he will have to prove that his long and sometimes troubled political history can withstand closer scrutiny.

Perry, the Texas governor, rearranged his schedule Thursday to try to mitigate a disastrous debate moment in which he could not remember the third of three federal agencies he would abolish. Perry canceled a Tennessee fundraiser to appear on several TV networks and David Letterman's "Late Show," pledging to stay in the race.

He repeatedly said he "stepped in it" at the Wednesday night debate but declared in an interview, "This ain't a day for quitting nothing."

Perry's campaign sent a fundraising letter noting that all humans make mistakes. It started a website contest that asks: "What part of the federal government would you like to forget about the most?"

His supporters are watching carefully for voters' reactions.

"It was very embarrassing to Rick Perry and to others who certainly supported him, and I'm sure that many of his Republican opponents are rejoicing," said Sen. James Inhofe, R-Okla., who has endorsed Perry. "Right now, he's joking around about it, and it seems to be favorably received from a lot of people I've heard from."

For Cain, the former Godfather's Pizza executive, it was another day of trying to get beyond sexual harassment accusations leveled against him a decade ago and came to light 11 days ago. The allegations were made by four women, two of whom received cash settlements from a restaurant trade association Cain once headed.

Facing voters for the first time since the allegations emerged, Cain met with tea party groups in Michigan. He hopes such friendly settings can help him retain the lofty perch he enjoyed in GOP polls two weeks ago.

"How you beat Obama? Beat him with a Cain!" he told one supporter at a crowded diner in Ypsilanti, near Detroit. The crowd cheered.

Cain is airing his first TV ad in Iowa. And he has hired a new lawyer, who is warning women they will be aggressively scrutinized for any charges made against the candidate.

Perry's and Cain's woes are strengthening Romney's position, but he's hardly home free. Many conservatives still resent his past support of legalized abortion and gay rights and his requirement that all Massachusetts residents obtain health insurance.

But they have failed to coalesce around a single alternative. Rep. Michele Bachmann briefly topped the polls last summer, followed by Perry and then Cain.

Some Iowa Republicans hope former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who emphasizes social conservative issues such as abortion and gay rights, can make a move. He has visited all 99 Iowa counties and aired radio commercials.

Other party insiders feel the person best poised to rise is Gingrich, the fiery Georgian who led the GOP's 1994 takeover of the House after 40 years in the minority. He eventually lost his leadership post and left the House after clashing with then-President Bill Clinton over taxes and an unpopular government showdown.

Gingrich is adding staff in key states, opening new offices this week and raising more money than he has in months.

With Romney widely seen as the front-runner in New Hampshire, a rival must do well in Iowa to surpass him. Gingrich is popular with many Iowa Republicans, and he drew good reviews for his speech at a large dinner in Des Moines last week.

But he has little structure in place for the organizationally intensive caucuses, which require people to show up for gatherings on a midwinter night. Gingrich has not done much of the retail-level campaigning seen by past successful caucus candidates. His schedule in the next 10 days shows him visiting the state to promote a movie he produced with his wife and participate in a multicandidate event aimed at social conservative activists.

Romney has made only four public visits to Iowa this year. But a small core of advisers and staff keeps in close touch with key elements of the Iowa network he assembled in 2007.

Bachmann had a bumpy day Thursday. About 30 Occupy Wall Street protesters loudly interrupted her foreign policy speech in Mount Pleasant, S.C., saying she was dividing the nation. Bachmann left the stage but returned and finished her speech after the protesters departed.

Mailbag: Is Darvish a?good fit for Red Sox?

Japanese star looks like a better bet than the one Boston took on Matsuzaka

World Baseball Classic - Finals Day 2MLB Photos via Getty Images

Yu Darvish is listed at 6-5 and built more along the lines of a traditional power pitcher, so he appears likelier to stay healthy and be a durable No. 1-2-starter type.

BASEBALL EXPERT MAILBAG

updated 3:06 p.m. ET Nov. 8, 2011

Tony DeMarco

Baseball Expert Tony DeMarco has been covering the big leagues since 1987, and been casting Hall of Fame ballots for the last 12 years. He answers questions weekly here:

Q. Have the Red Sox learned their lesson after spending about $100 million on Daisuke Matsuzaka, or will they make a run at Yu Darvish?
?
Stephen Shoemaker, Tulsa

A. Answering the second question first, given the state of their rotation, the Red Sox have to explore both free-agent and trade options this winter. And Darvish arguably is the top free-agent pitcher on the market now that CC Sabathia re-upped with the Yankees.

At this point, the Red Sox can count on Josh Beckett, Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz returning from back issues. But John Lackey is out for 2012 (Tommy John surgery) and Matsuzaka is coming off the same surgery and not expected back until the second half.

That leaves Alfredo Aceves, bringing back Tim Wakefield, moving Daniel Bard to the rotation (although I think he will be the closer), or bringing in new help.

While it's true that Matsuzaka hasn't been a good investment at $103 million over six years (including the $51-million posting fee to get his rights), he was brilliant in 2008, compiled a combined 33-15 record in 2007-2008, and a 49-30 mark over four-plus seasons before the injury that required surgery.

What makes Darvish more appealing than Matsuzaka back in the winter of 2006-07? Darvish is 23 and Matsuzaka was 26, so there is less wear-and-tear on Darvish's arm at this point. Also, Darvish is listed at 6-5 and built more along the lines of a traditional power pitcher, so he appears likelier to stay healthy and be a durable No. 1-2-starter type.

That said, Darvish is going to be an expensive risk for whoever ends up signing him, but the payoff also could be huge. You just can't find many guys who are legitimate No. 1-2 starters on championship-caliber teams.

Q. With the upcoming sale of the Dodgers, how can Frank McCourt expect to get close to $1 billion? Who do you see as the favorite to buy the team?
? Bill Mahan, Angeles City, Philippines

A. Although the Dodgers have become something of a dysfunctional mess at the ownership level in the McCourt era, make no mistake: This is one of the elite franchises ? not just in MLB, but in all professional sports.

When you add in the value of the team, the real estate at Chavez Ravine, plus media rights, I believe the selling price will go beyond $1 billion.

Run properly, the Dodgers should be the West Coast version of the Yankees/Red Sox ? a championship contender every year ? and they will move in that direction under new ownership.

Who are the possibilities? Reportedly, a group headed by longtime agent Dennis Gilbert, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, a group headed by former Dodgers Steve Garvey and Orel Hershiser and a group headed by former owner Peter O'Malley.

It's too early in the process to tell who will come out ahead, but the new owner will have to be approved by MLB as well as federal bankruptcy court in Delaware, as McCourt filed for bankruptcy.

Gilbert, now a consultant for White Sox owners Jerry Reinsdorf, long has been viewed as a solid ownership candidate who likely would have the approval of commissioner Bud Selig and the ownership power bloc.

Cuban is a bit of a loose cannon here. He almost won the bidding for the Texas Rangers last year, and while I don't think other owners would welcome his presence, I'd be very interested to see what he would do with the Dodgers franchise.

While action is expected soon, the key question here is will things move quickly enough for general manager Ned Colletti to take major action in the free-agent market this winter.

Q. We've had a major trend back to old-style ballparks, with seating capacity to match. Over 10,000 fewer Cardinals fans got to see Game 7 in the new Busch Stadium than would have fit in the old one. Are teams killing big paydays for more intimate seating?
? Larry, Encinitas, Calif.

A. On the contrary. While seating capacities are smaller in the new parks, what you have to keep in mind is that creates a greater demand for the seats, which allows teams to charge far-higher ticket prices.

The newer stadiums also have more higher-priced seats ? luxury boxes, premium behind-the-backstop seats, etc. ? than the old stadiums did, and that's where the big money is.

Having the capacity to put a bunch of people in the bleachers or lower-priced seats isn't what drives stadium revenues in this day and age So to a certain point, smaller can be better.

USS Cole bomb suspect finally gets his day in court (Reuters)

GUANTANAMO BAY U.S. NAVAL BASE, Cuba (Reuters) ? Nine years after his capture and a decade after the United States first authorized military tribunals for terrorist suspects, the alleged mastermind of the deadly bombing of the USS Cole will face a judge in the Guantanamo war crimes tribunal.

Abd al Rahim al Nashiri, a 46-year-old Saudi of Yemeni descent, is to be arraigned Wednesday on charges that include murder, attempted murder, conspiracy and terrorism.

He is the first high-ranking al Qaeda figure to face charges at Guantanamo under the Obama administration and could face the death penalty if convicted. But attorneys expect it will be a year or two before the case goes to trial.

Nashiri is accused of conspiring with Osama bin Laden and other al Qaeda leaders to bomb U.S. targets, including embassies in Africa and ships in the Gulf of Aden.

In the attack on the Cole in October 2000, two suicide bombers in civilian garb waved at the crew and then drove their boat full of explosives into the side of the warship as it refueled in the Port of Aden. The blast tore a 30-foot (9 meter) hole in the ship, killing 17 U.S. sailors and wounding three dozen more.

Nashiri, described by U.S. investigators as al Qaeda's one-time head of operations in the Arabian Peninsula, is accused of planning and preparing the attack, choosing the suicide bombers and helping buy the boat and explosives.

He is accused of plotting similar boat-bomb attacks on another U.S. warship and a French oil tanker off Yemen. The January 2000 attack on the other warship, the USS The Sullivans, failed when the would-be suicide bombers ran their boat aground. The October 2002 attack on the tanker, the MV Limburg, killed a crewman and dumped 90,000 barrels of oil into the Gulf of Aden.

Nashiri is also accused of providing a fake passport to a suspect in the 1998 U.S. Embassy bombings in Kenya and Tanzania.

An al Qaeda operative quoted in the 9-11 Commission report described Nashiri as widely known to be one of al Qaeda's most committed terrorists, "extreme in ferocity in waging jihad."

Nashiri claimed to have become a millionaire as a merchant trader. He lived for a while with a Russian prostitute in Dubai, according to a former FBI agent who investigated the Cole bombing.

Nashiri was captured in Dubai in 2002 and held in secret CIA prisons before being sent to Guantanamo in 2006.

The CIA acknowledged destroying videotapes of Nashiri's interrogations, during which he was stripped naked and hooded while a gun was loaded and a power drill revved next to his head. He also was subjected to "waterboarding," which creates the sensation of drowning.

Nashiri has said he gave false confessions that made his interrogators stop the mistreatment.

TORTURE-TAINTED EVIDENCE?

"One time they tortured me one way and another time they tortured me in a different way," he told an administrative panel at Guantanamo in 2007, according to U.S. military transcripts. He denied being part of al Qaeda.

But Guantanamo prosecutors said in court documents that they have more than 60,000 pages of classified and unclassified investigative material to support the charges against him.

A former Guantanamo chief prosecutor said the evidence against Nashiri is overwhelming enough to convict him in a tribunal or a regular federal court without his potentially tainted confessions.

"I think there's ample evidence of his guilt. You can disregard everything he's ever said since he was in U.S. custody and still have enough evidence to convict," said retired Air Force Colonel Moe Davis, who resigned as Guantanamo's chief prosecutor in 2007 because of what he called political meddling and pressure to use torture-tainted evidence.

Defense attorney Richard Kammen said Nashiri's treatment in U.S. hands would be a major issue in the trial and likely the reason he was being tried at Guantanamo rather than in a federal court.

"That's just going to infect everything in this case," Kammen said. "What this whole process is about is to keep the public from knowing the full extent of the things which he and a lot of other people were subjected to."

Almost 780 men from around the world have been held at the detention center on the Guantanamo Bay U.S. naval base in Cuba since it opened in January 2002. Of the 171 who remain, the Obama administration deemed 44 eligible for prosecution, but Nashiri is the only one currently facing charges.

November 13 marks the 10th anniversary of President George W. Bush's order creating the Guantanamo tribunals for terrorism suspects.

The U.S. Supreme Court struck down that version in 2006, ruling that the president had no authority to create a new court system. It said that power rested with Congress, which created a new version of the tribunals in 2006 and then revised them at the behest of the Obama administration in 2009 to grant the defendants more rights.

Hearings have taken place sporadically amid the legal challenges and in its entire existence, the Guantanamo court has completed only six cases. Four defendants pleaded guilty in exchange for leniency and one was convicted in a trial in which no defense was presented.

Russia, China laud their economic bloc (AP)

MOSCOW ? The member states of a security pact dominated by Russia and China pledged Monday to boost their financial and energy cooperation, despite the global economic slowdown.

The members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization praised their economies' "stability" and "attractiveness for investment" in a joint statement issued Monday in St. Petersburg, Russia.

The six-member bloc, which also includes four ex-Soviet nations of Central Asia, will create a joint development bank that will finance projects to improve transit potential and infrastructure, the statement said.

The pact is widely seen as a tool that China and Russia use to limit Western influence in the strategic, energy-rich region. It also provides a forum for China to display its rising diplomatic influence and economic might.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said in televised remarks that the infrastructure development will "help realize the (organization's) colossal transit potential, strengthen its role as a link between Europe and the Asia Pacific region."

Russia will invest $500 million into a 750-kilometer electricity power transmission line from ex-Soviet Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Putin said.

The project, known as CASA-1000, will cost up to $2 billion to complete. It has been mothballed for years due to instability in Afghanistan.

"Considering the improvement of the situation there, we could renew the project," Putin said.

Analysts say China is using aid, diplomacy and investment to shove Russia aside in the region that Moscow still considers its backyard.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin's hand has been weakened after Russia lost its monopoly on distributing Central Asian natural gas and its major role in other energy sectors in the region.

China and Russia were bitter rivals in the communist camp during the Cold War, but ties have warmed considerably in recent years, partly from a mutual desire to counter U.S. influence in world affairs.

The group took its present form in 2001 with the initial goals of addressing religious extremism and border security in Central Asia, but has grown into a bloc aimed at challenging U.S. influence in the region.

The group's meetings also include the leaders of its dialogue partners and observer members, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and Mongolia.
