Peter, Paul and Mary bassist Dick Kniss dies at 74 (AP)

SAUGERTIES, N.Y. ? Dick Kniss, a bassist who performed for five decades with the folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary and co-wrote the John Denver hit "Sunshine on My Shoulders," has died. He was 74.

Kniss died Wednesday of pulmonary disease at a hospital near his home in the Hudson Valley town of Saugerties, his wife, Diane Kniss said.

Kniss was born in Portland, Ore., and was an original member of Denver's 1970s band. He also played with jazz greats including Herbie Hancock and Woody Herman.

Active in the 1960s civil rights movement, Kniss performed at benefits for a range of causes and played during the first celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday as a national holiday.

Peter, Paul and Mary's Peter Yarrow said in a statement that Kniss was "our intrepid bass player for almost as long as we performed together.

"He was a dear and beloved part of our closest family circle and his bass playing was always a great fourth voice in our music as well as, conceptually, an original and delightfully surprising new statement added to our vocal arrangements," Yarrow said.

Sudan says to release ships seized from South Sudan (Reuters)

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) ? Sudan will free ships carrying cargos of crude it seized from South Sudan to ease tensions between the former civil war foes and help the two states agree on a deal over oil revenue, Sayed El-Khatib, deputy head of negotiating team said on Saturday.

"President Bashir is ready to make this gesture. Sudan is going to release the vessels detained in Port Sudan," he told a media conference in the Ethiopian capital.

South Sudan became independent in July under a 2005 peace agreement with Khartoum that ended decades of conflict but both sides have failed to agree how to untangle their oil industries.

The new landlocked nation needs to use a northern pipeline and the port of Port Sudan to export its crude but has failed to reach an agreement with Khartoum over a transit fee, prompting Sudan to start seizing oil as compensation.

South Sudan said on Monday it had started shutting down oil production and accused Sudan of seizing $815 million worth of crude.

South Sudan's top negotiator said on Friday his country would complete the shutdown by Saturday, after Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and South Sudan's President Salva Kiir met on the sidelines of a meeting of East African officials in Ethiopia.

Sudan said it was freeing the ships to help end the deadlock.

"By doing this step, we expect the cover agreement to be signed, the shutdown to be halted, and the terms of the cover agreement to be respected," said El-Khatib.

"Before the end of today, we could be able to sign the cover agreement. We, at least, are ready to sign."

Officials said in November South Sudan was producing about 350,000 barrels of oil per day.

China is the biggest buyer of oil from the two countries, some 12.99 million barrels last year. That amounted to five percent of last year's crude imports by China, which is also the top investor in South Sudan's oilfields.

Occupy protesters barred from camping in DC squares (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The National Park Service will bar Occupy DC protesters from camping in the two parks where have been living since October, in a blow to one of the highest-profile chapters of the movement denouncing economic inequality.

The Occupy DC protesters must stop camping in McPherson Square and Freedom Plaza, both a few blocks from the White House, starting at about noon on Monday, the Park Service said on Friday.

The Park Service will start to enforce regulations that "prohibit camping and the use of temporary structures for camping in McPherson Square and Freedom Plaza," the agency said in a flyer distributed at the sites.

"Although 24/7 demonstration vigils and the use of symbolic temporary structures, including empty tents used as symbols of the demonstration, may be permitted in the park areas, camping and the use of temporary structures for camping is not."

The protesters have been in the two sites since around the start of October. They have spearheaded numerous protests in Washington, including a demonstration that drew hundreds of people to the Capitol this month.

The McPherson Square site has drawn increasing criticism from Congress and the District of Columbia administration.

The park bordering K Street, a symbol of Washington lobbyists, has been criticized because of squalor and rats, and the protesters' numbers have been swelled by homeless people.

Sara Shaw, a McPherson Square protester handling contacts with the media, said the group would discuss its response at an evening meeting. She said 50 to 100 people were living in the square.

Bob Vogel, superintendent of the National Mall and Memorial Parks, said in a statement: "The National Park Service takes very seriously its tradition of providing opportunities for First Amendment activities.

"We have a long history spanning several decades of 24-hour First Amendment vigils."

LG Nitro HD Surpasses 1 Million Units Sold

nitrohdcomScore recently ranked LG second in the world in terms of mobile OEM market share, and it would seem the good news keeps on coming for the smiley-face company. The Nitro HD, or Optimus LTE if you're from outside of the States, has reportedly hit 1 million units sold. It was first available in South Korea last year in October, and LG sold 600,000 units on its home turf. After venturing into new lands, including Japan, Canada, and the US of A, another 400,000 units were sold. According to my calculator, 600,000 plus 400,000 does indeed total 1 million units.

Shays officially announces Conn. Senate bid (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? Former Connecticut U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays is making it official and announcing he is a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate.

Shays made his announcement Wednesday at the Old State House in downtown Hartford. About 200 people attended.

Shays said he wants to put "the country back on track and our fellow Americans back to work."

He represented Connecticut's 4th Congressional District in Congress from 1987 until 2009. His congressional career ended after he lost to Democrat Jim Himes in 2008.

Shays' top competition for the GOP endorsement is wealthy former wrestling executive Linda McMahon. There are three other Republicans and three Democrats also hoping to fill the seat now held by the retiring U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent.

Zynga's Dream PetHouse on iOS: Adopt pets high in the tree tops

With the launch of both Dream Heights and Dream Pethouse on iOS, Zynga has had a pretty busy week for releases, at least on the Canadian iTunes store. As of this writing, both games are only available to our friends up North, but if you're able to download Dream Pethouse on either iPhone or iPad, you'll find a free-to-play city-builder of sorts, asking you to fill a tree with fun pets of all shapes and sizes.

At first glance, Dream PetHouse resembles Tecmo's Jollywood on Facebook, since both ask you to build societies high in the trees, and even force you to build bridges and ladders so that each new item somehow connects to those that are already in the tree. However, Dream PetHouse places much more focus on the animals themselves, as your tree will grow to bear fruit which can be fed to these pets to help them grow (older pets offer better profits). Just as you'll earn experience points when completing tasks (leveling up unlocks new items to purchase for your tree), each pet has its own Age meter, which fills as its fed.

Over time, your pets' homes will produce a few coins of profit, which can then be used to purchase more pets and more homes, or even to expand the size of the tree. There's a goal system that takes advantage of most of the game's features, asking you to collect coins from specific buildings, place specific items or buildings in your tree and so on. Interestingly, you'll need to collect the profits from these goals manually, so you may forget that you've completed one altogether. This is odd for a mobile game, since things are normally streamlined as much as possible for quick pick-up-and-play sessions.

In addition to homes, you can also purchase Play Areas for your pets, like Restaurants, Aquariums and more. Each building requires you to pay for multiple stages of construction before it's complete, as you'll need to hire a builder for one stage and then a painter for the final stage, as one example. These rooms serve to further flesh out the look of your tree, and can also be used to earn profits after a few minutes or hours, depending on the room.

In terms of social play, you can use Facebook Connect to add friends from Facebook, or you can visit community neighbors, earning food to feed your pets in the process. For the most part however, the game runs just fine as a solo experience.

All told, Dream PetHouse is a fairly simple iPhone game, that can be played in either long sessions (since you'll always have pets to play with), or in short bursts (while waiting for your rooms to generate profits). It might almost be too simple a game for some users, but the high-quality graphics and charm are definitely there. Whether that instant Zynga popularity will be there as well remains to be seen.

Are you excited to try Dream PetHouse when it launches in the American iTunes store? If you've had a chance to play this one, what do you think of it so far? Sound off in the comments.

State of the Union Address 2012: Obama Speech Outlines American Dream, Reelection Strategy

In his last State of the Union address before the 2012 election, President Obama called upon Congress to work together to rebuild the coveted American Dream.

Our 44th President promised, in a memorable phrase, “no bail-outs, no hand-outs, no cop-outs” to financial institutions that helped derail the U.S. economy.

Obama spoke about “fair” tax reform with a thinly-veiled reference to phrases Republican presidential candidates have used against him repeatedly in debates.

“You can call this ‘class warfare’ all you want,” he said, calling it pure fairness. Without a doubt, the 2012 State of the Union address was a campaign speech:

He said Americans must get past personal ambition and partisan obsession to "focus on the mission at hand" and keep the dream alive by restoring the economy.

"No challenge is more urgent. No debate is more important," he said.

"We can either settle for a country where a shrinking number of people do really well, while a growing number barely get by. Or we can restore an economy where everyone gets a fair shot, everyone does their fair share and everyone plays by the same rules."

"Do we want to keep tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans? Or do we want invest in everything else? If we're serious about paying down our debt, we can't do both."

Rebuttals came quickly and predictably from political opponents.

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who delivered the "official" GOP response, said that the president's rigid adherence to ideology was suffocating innovation:

"Extremism that stifles development of homegrown energy, or cancels a perfectly safe pipeline that would employ tens of thousands, or jacks up consumer utility bills for no improvement in either human health or world temperature, is a pro-poverty policy."

"We do not accept that ours will ever be a nation of haves and have nots; we must always be a nation of haves and soon to haves," Daniels said.

On Fox News, Sean Hannity interviewed GOP candidate Mitt Romney, who asserted that, on the basis of this night, the President is “disconnected from reality.”

The bipartisan high point of the evening occurred just before the speech, as Obama, in making his way to the podium, paused to hug Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Giffords is resigning from Congress this week to recover from her brain injury. A chant of “Gabby, Gabby, Gabby” could be heard throughout the House floor.
