The weak May unemployment report released Friday, June 1, 2012, presents President Barack Obama with a sobering reminder that his stewardship of a gradual recovery from the deepest recession since the Great Depression presents a tenuous argument for his re-election. (AP) ? The discouraging new unemployment numbers present President Barack Obama with a sobering reminder that an uneven recovery from the recession can be a fragile argument for his re-election. It's all deepening his anxiety over the political and economic threat posed by the European debt crisis.

Anemic job growth and an uptick in joblessness to 8.2 percent also give new resonance to Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney's campaign and put Obama on the defensive after a winter when the job trends were in his favor. Job growth now has been disappointing for three straight months, accentuating challenges ahead for the president.

Obama, speaking about the economy Friday in Minnesota, kept up an optimistic front. While he said the latest jobs report indicated that the economy was not growing fast enough, he predicted, "We will come back stronger; we do have better days ahead."

Romney called the figures "devastating news."

The Republican said in an interview Friday with CNBC that Obama's policies and his handling of the economy had "been dealt a harsh indictment."

Shortly after the report was released, Obama was in Minnesota to push his proposal to expand job opportunities for veterans and to raise money for his campaign. In the meantime, the world anxiously awaits the impact of the European debt crisis, which could stall the recovery in the U.S.

"What we're looking at is the longer-term trend," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters traveling with Obama. The economy is still adding jobs, as it has for more than two years, Earnest said, "but it's readily apparent that we're not adding those jobs at a rapid enough pace."

The unemployment numbers, while imprecise and a typically lagging indicator of economic performance, are nevertheless an undeniable marker of the human cost of a weak economy.

May's 69,000 new jobs and downward adjustments for March and April mean the economy averaged just 73,000 jobs a month over the past two months. That's half of what's needed simply to keep up with population growth and is a dramatic drop from the 226,000 jobs created per month in the January-March quarter.

May's 8.2 percent jobless rate, the first increase in 11 months, reflects more people coming back into the job force, a thin silver lining to an otherwise dismal report

No president since the Great Depression has sought re-election with unemployment as high as that, and past incumbents have lost when the unemployment rate was on the rise.

Romney wants this presidential election to be a referendum on Obama's 3 1/2 years in office. Obama wants it to be a choice between two distinct visions for the country.

Obama is counting on an unemployment trajectory that has brought the rate from a high of 10 percent in October 2009. The president likes to point to the 3.8 million jobs created since he became president, though 12.5 million Americans remain unemployed. He highlights the resurgence of the auto industry following government bailouts of Chrysler and General Motors.

Friday's report seriously dampens Obama's message.

The United States has experienced periods of jobs slowdown for the past three years, only to bounce back. Last year, from May to August, job growth averaged 80,000 a month and from June through September of 2010, the average was 76,000. But Obama can't afford a prolonged period of feeble growth.

What's more, this downturn comes at a time of elevated worry over the eurozone's debt and economic crises. The issue has consumed Obama's time. It was the central subject at an economic summit with major powers at Camp David last month and took up most of the time in a secure conference call this week among Obama and the leaders of Germany, France and Italy.

Obama is pushing Congress to enact several proposals designed to spur job growth and secure the housing industry. "Congress has a responsibility here," Earnest said.

At the same time, his campaign has mounted a step-by-step assault on Romney's economic record, from his days as a venture capitalist to his tenure as Massachusetts governor from 2003-2007.

The Obama campaign released a new online video Friday that features several of Romney's former Republican political foes, including Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich, criticizing Romney's economic record.

The campaign also said it would hold a series of conference calls with reporters to discuss Romney's "failure to fulfill the economic promises he made" when he was running for governor of Massachusetts.

Romney, now freed from his primary contests, has aimed heavily at Obama's economic policies, arguing that they have slowed the recovery, not aided it. The Republican has emphasized his background in private business to argue that he's qualified to lead a nation in economic turmoil.

On Friday, his campaign released a new television ad promising "a better day" and declaring that a Romney presidency would focus from the start on the economy and the deficit, unleash U.S. energy resources and stand up to China on trade.

"President Romney's leadership puts jobs first," the ad states.

Obama could face the highest unemployment rate on Election Day of any president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt. But his aides argue that the trend line is more important than the actual number. Jimmy Carter lost his re-election bid in 1980 to Ronald Reagan as unemployment climbed from 6 percent to 7.5 percent. George H.W. Bush lost to Bill Clinton in 1992 as unemployment rose from 6.9 percent to 7.6 percent.

But while Reagan faced unemployment of 7.4 percent in October 1984, the rate had been dropping since the spring of 1983. He went on to win re-election.

Obama can find some solace in unemployment rates that have dropped sharply in several swing states. But those numbers can be deceiving and an employed voter is not necessarily an Obama voter.

A May Associated Press-GfK poll showed that 52 percent of those surveyed disapproved of Obama's handling of the economy while 46 percent approved.

Small Business Optimism Remains High | Cision Wire

The SurePayroll Small Business Scorecard??shows businesses still in holding pattern

GLENVIEW, IL ?May 31, 2012 ? SurePayroll Inc., the leader in providing online payroll to small businesses nationwide, today announced May results for its monthly SurePayroll Small Business Scorecard??showing small business owners' optimism at 64 percent, with hiring and paychecks showing little change (both down 0.1 percent month over month). Optimism remains well off its low of 33 percent in September of last year.

The Scorecard optimism survey found 50 percent of respondents are experiencing increased revenue and growth in their businesses, but they say productivity is outpacing the need to hire.

?We?re seeing small businesses circling the runway right now. They?re not sure when and where to land,? said SurePayroll CEO and President Michael Alter. ?Small businesses have made themselves more efficient through technology during this recovery, which is a good thing for them. However, it creates a holding pattern situation for the economy where increased hiring is not yet necessary.?

Month-over-month SurePayroll Scorecard data shows hiring and paychecks just barely negative (-0.1 for both). Month-over-month regional hiring was down except in the South, where it was up 0.2 percent. Month-over-month regional paychecks were up in the Midwest and flat in the South and West. Paychecks were down only in the Northeast (-0.4 percent).

Year-over-year, nationwide hiring is down only 1.5 percent and paychecks are down 1.1 percent. The South continues to show promising signs with hiring up 1.7 percent and paychecks up 0.5 percent. The West has had the steepest hiring decline at 5.3 percent.

As the first economic indicator created by a payroll company, the SurePayroll Scorecard has provided a monthly look on national hiring and paycheck trends since September 2004. SurePayroll's Scorecard compiles data from over 35,000 small businesses, and exclusively reflects the trends affecting the nation's "micro businesses" ? those with an average of eight employees. The full SurePayroll Small Business Scorecard?including data for the top 35 MSAs will be available later today at?www.SurePayroll.com/scorecard.>

DENVER ? New research out of Denmark suggests that working overnight shifts can increase a woman?s chances of getting breast cancer by 40 percent.?

The study was published this week in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine.?

It suggested the risk of cancer grew with time, and that women who considered themselves morning people had an even greater risk.?

Ellyn Matthews, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Denver, says working that shift may affect hormone production.?

?They are exposed to light when they normally wouldn?t be, and it decreases the production and release of melatonin and that has been associated in some studies with an increased risk of breast cancer,? Matthews says.?

But she wants women to remember this is just one possible risk factor of many.?

Leeches and lances might seem like prescriptions from the past. But bloodletting might be back in vogue. A small study shows that losing a little blood might improve cardiovascular health for obese people who also have what?s called metabolic syndrome.

The study tracked 33 patients with metabolic syndrome?defined by the presence of some of an assortment of conditions, such as high cholesterol, hypertension and insulin resistance. Researchers took 300 milliliters of blood from the patients, a little less than the one pint standard donation, with a repeat treatment a month later.

After six weeks, treated adults had lower blood pressure than the control group. Glucose levels also decreased, which suggests limited blood removal might improve metabolic health. The findings are in the journal BMC Medicine. [Khosrow Houschyar et al., "Effects of phlebotomy-induced reduction of body iron stores on metabolic syndrome: results from a randomized clinical trial"]

The researchers think that the blood loss reduces iron levels. And excess iron in the blood has been tied to many metabolic syndrome ailments.

The FDA has okayed leeches for some procedures. Which could lead patients to thank their doctors for a treatment that sucks.

Heat Beat Celtics In Overtime, 115-111: Miami Wins Game 2 Despite Rajon Rondo's 44 Points (VIDEO)

MIAMI ? The biggest postseason comeback in Miami Heat franchise history wasn't enough.

The Heat needed more ? and got it, digging deep to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals.

LeBron James scored 34 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Dwyane Wade scored 23 and the Heat rallied from 15 down to beat the Boston Celtics 115-111 in overtime on Wednesday night.

Mario Chalmers scored 22 for the Heat, who won despite an unbelievable night by Rajon Rondo. The Celtics guard played all 53 minutes and scored 44 points, dished out 10 assists and grabbed eight rebounds.

Paul Pierce scored 21 points, Kevin Garnett added 18 and Ray Allen 13 for Boston.

Allen's 3-pointer with 34.3 seconds left tied the game at 99-all. James missed two shots, first a layup ? he got the rebound of his own miss ? and then a jumper on the final possession of regulation, and to overtime they went.

Game 3 is Friday in Boston.

The Heat had come back from 14 points down in playoff games twice before, first in Game 6 of the 2006 NBA finals ? their title clincher ? and again last season against Philadelphia.

And this one was slipping away, more than once. James also two free throws 21 seconds into overtime, and Miami looked in trouble.

The scoring dossier in overtime began like this: Rondo scored, Heat tied it, Rondo scored, Heat tied it, Rondo scored, Heat tied it.

When Rondo missed a layup with 1:33 left, Miami took advantage, with Udonis Haslem getting a dunk to put the Heat up 105-103. And after a turnover on the next Boston possession, Wade drove the lane, hit the deck and watched as his layup bounced on the rim and dropped through.

Garnett stood over Wade and glared, to no avail. Wade hit the free throw, and Miami was up 110-105 with 59.7 seconds left.

On a night where the Heat missed 16 free throws ? including at least four by James in crucial situations ? they would survive.

Miami was down by 15 in the first half and by as many as 11 in the third quarter, before a pair of 3-pointers by James started a comeback. Wade made consecutive jumpers midway through the third to shake off a slow start to his night and get the Heat within three both times, and the 2006 NBA finals MVP set up Haslem for a three-point play with 2:55 left that gave Miami its first lead since the opening minutes, 73-71.

As Haslem's shot dropped, Wade spun at midcourt and punched the air. More highlights followed.

Miami's lead got to as much as seven in the third after James blocked Pierce's shot near the rim, sending the ball high into the air and starting a sequence that was capped by a three-point play from Wade, pushing the margin to 78-71. It capped a 12-0 run for the Heat, who took an 81-75 lead into the fourth.

It was the fifth straight game where Miami outscored its opponent by double-digits in the third quarter. In each of the previous four of those outings, Miami never trailed in the final period.

That streak ended in this one.

And a call that Boston argued against played a big role in the Celtics getting the lead back.

James stole the ball from Rondo early in the fourth, drove down the court and got wrapped up by Mickael Pietrus, who was assessed a clear-path foul, meaning Miami got two free throws and the ball. James missed both foul shots, Mike Miller missed a 3-pointer later in the possession, and the lead stayed at 85-81.

Barely a minute later, it was gone. Pietrus hit a 3-pointer, Rondo followed with a steal and layup and Boston led 86-85. The Celtics led by five with 3:50 left after a jumper by Pierce, and the Celtics looked to be in control.

It was temporary. The Heat scored the next nine points, Haslem's jumper with 1:08 remaining put Miami up 98-94. So of course, back came Boston ? Allen's 3-pointer tying the game a few moments after Pierce fouled out.

Early on, it was all Boston. Over the first 15-plus minutes, Boston was shooting 65 percent (15 for 23), Miami 27 percent (7 for 26).

Miami's point guard did his best to keep the Heat close.

Chalmers had 12 in the second quarter and seven in a 14-6 Miami spurt to end the half. He hit a pair of 3-pointers during the flurry, Wade got his first points of the night on a falling-down layup with 27 seconds left and the Heat closed the margin to 53-46 by halftime.

NOTES: Celebrities in attendance included UCLA coach Ben Howland, rapper Flo Rida and former Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino, a regular in the Heat crowd. ... Rondo's other 22-point first half was Feb. 22, 2009 at Phoenix. ... Allen, considered one of the game's absolute best shooters for many years, said he's been getting plenty of unsolicited advice lately on how to get rolling again. "I've only been doing this for 20 years," Allen said at the morning shootaround. ... Haslem (6) had more rebounds than Boston (5) in the third quarter. ... Heat C Ronny Turiaf started, played the first 4:51 and did not return. Joel Anthony started the second half in Turiaf's place.

?While the Men Watch? gave me a headache ? Hockey in Society

May 31, 2012 by courtneyszto

Photo from Dan ? Manifest Photography

I figured as a hockey blogger who agreed with all of the naysayers when the announcement about While the Men Watch came out that I owed it to the ladies to at least watch some of their show to give them the benefit of the doubt. ?Well, I did and I could only take one period. ?I?m not sure how many of you watched the live stream of While the Mean Watch during Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals but it was one of the most painful experiences of my life. ?It is one period of hockey that I will never get back and I think that I should be able to sue the CBC for those minutes of my life back.

Their stream was filmed in a studio at CBC headquarters with a traditionally feminine set that would make more sense for The View than for a sports commentary, alternative or otherwise. ?The ladies, Jules Mancuso and Lena Sutherland, introduced Sunny their CBC producer and Jamie Ordolis, Senior Producer of CBC Live. The entire webcast centered around dialogue between these four, and of course tweets from the Twitterverse. ?Right off the bat we had Sunny, the only man on the webcast, explaining to Mancuso and Sutherland basics of the game (e.g. the playoff record of the LA Kings). ?Sunny was their go-to-guy for anything actually related to the game: players, stats, facts, and explanations.

After the anthem one of the women commented??Martin Brodeur looks like he?s getting into a straddle position? in reference to his pre-game stretches. ?Then they said that ?Brodeur is looking like a rooster with the red and the chest puffed out. He is a good looking man, once you take off all of that transformer gear?he?s quite a dashing man. I?m partial to the older ones.? ?Really CBC? This is what you call alternative commentary? I would call it mindless drivel, but wait it gets better, er, worse.

Then we get into the real meat of their commentary concerning the roster. ?They explain that, to both ladies and gentlemen, a printable roster can be found on CBC?s website and that the roster is important not because we ?care about their scoring stats. We want to know about their height, weight, where they are from?? ?The roster becomes extremely important because it will be used to determine THE BOYFRIEND OF THE GAME. ?This is where the blood started dripping from my ears.

Boyfriend of the Game: Zach Parise. Photo from Sportressofblogitude

The Boyfriend of the Game (BFOTG) is what makes the hockey game more bearable for women, and I would assume gay men, to watch. ?This leads us into The Pair and the Spare. ?The Pair is your #1 choice for BFOTG, but you also need a backup and a spare for your backup. ?For today?s game Zach Parise was the lucky fella who received the BFOTG title, David Clarkson was selected as the backup (although was almost dumped quickly afterwards when they thought he was missing a tooth), and Adam Henrique came in as the spare. ?Sutherland (I think, not quite sure which one is which but it?s not like it really matters) then explained that Parise is a little shorter than what she prefers for BFOTG but that his 5?11 and 195 lb. frame are still ?doable, well straddleable.? ?Awesome. ?Sunny also explained to the women that LA has never won a Stanley Cup to which one of them replied, ?Wouldn?t you say they are the virgins of the playoffs?? The other stated, ?If they win, LA will ?be laid. Twitter #popthatcherry?.

When Fraser scored the first goal of the game Mancuso and Sutherland acknowledged the goal and then went right back to their teenage high school dialogue of ?Would you rather??? ?The question for the first period was would you rather take a hall pass (an allowable infidelity) with your BFOTG it if meant that you would have to abstain from sex with your man for three months? ?Sutherland?s reply, ?This is a thinker eh!? ?I think we need to redefine what thinking is if this ?would you rather? is considered a thinker. ?There were some other tidbits of ?alternative commentary? genius such as ?what do you call it when they miss?? To which Sunny replied, ?it?s just a miss?, but I think you get the idea.

Forget the fact that these women play to every negative stereotype about women and sports. Forget the fact that they turn to the only man on their set to learn about hockey. ?Forget that they clearly are playing dumb in order to meet their mandate. ?The problem with While the Men Watch is not Sutherland and Mancuso. The problem is that so little positive attention is directed at women in and around sports that when an opportunity to provide an alternative commentary on the Stanley Cup Playoffs arises said opportunity did NOT go to women who can speak intelligently about the sport; rather, the opportunity went to two women who don?t actually enjoy the game and have to find ways to make the sport more bearable to sit through. ?If women received equitable representation on SportsCenter, in the sports pages, and in sports blogs then go ahead, give them their 15 minutes; but we don?t. So those few opportunities to enter the masculine arena of sports, especially when provided by a national institution such as CBC, should go towards creating acceptance for women talking about sports, not reaffirm negative stereotypes.

I?m sorry but While the Men Watch is not an alternative commentary. There would have to be game commentary in order for it to be called commentary. ?It is however heteronormative, sexist, and sex-filled banter that diminishes the game of hockey, attempts to objectify men, and is a horrible example of Third-Wave feminism** (and no, objectifying men is not called equality). I get that plenty of women like to talk about how hot Lundquist is. Just like how many, many, many men only watched tennis because Anna Kournikova was playing. ?Heck, my own mother comments about how ?cute? Alain Vigneault is whenever they show him on screen, but at least she knows what the crease is. ?Now, I?m not saying that women must demonstrate a certain level of hockey knowledge before they can be accepted into the inner circle, which is generally how it works; but this ?show? does not make non-hockey fans into hockey fans. ?You don?t learn anything about the game! You learn about which players are ?doable? but I really don?t think you need a national platform to do that. ?CBC could have used these women to teach non-fans about the great sport of hockey in a non-intimidating playful way; but no, they decided to pander to the cornerstone of marketing ? sex.

Suffice it to say I will take Jim Hughson calling the game any day. ?I would even rather watch Don Cherry in his loudest suit rant about left-wing pinkos and pukes, but I will not be watching While the Men Watch ever again. There are many important hockey issues that deserve a CBC webcast forum but the LA Kings popping it?s Stanley Cup cherry is not one of them. ?While the men?and women and children watched the CBC telecast of Game 1, I got a headache.

If you would like to watch the opening skit that Mancuso and Sutherland wrote as a way of firing back at their haters watch below. ?Please note that although the skit was written as joke, the discussion is extremely close to their actual ?commentary?.

Game 1 Opening Skit. From CBC.

*The quotes included in this post are not verbatim, but are pretty close. I was typing while they were talking so I tried my best.

**Third-Wave Feminism (AKA Girl Power) is premised upon neoliberal ideas of success and empowerment. It largely believes that ?feminism? is no longer needed because gender equality has been achieved by some. Furthermore Third-Wave feminists celebrate sexuality in a manner that appears empowered but still largely exists within hegemonic male domains.

Jessica Biel 'Ready' To Marry Justin Timberlake

'I don't think our marriage will change anything,' she tells French magazine Gala.

Although there have been multiple reports and confirmations from relatives of Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake's engagement, the notoriously private couple have yet to really speak out about their upcoming nuptials — until now.

Biel recently opened up about her life with Timberlake during an interview with French magazine Gala — the English translation of which was provided by People — and she admitted that she doesn't expect married life to be any different.

"To me, nothing will really change, because I'm almost never home," Biel said. "But when I am home, I enjoy cooking. I especially love making cupcakes," she added, then admitted her attempts to get creative with recipes can be "a total disaster" but that she's had a pleasant surprise with a recent batch of zucchini fritters.

"I don't think our marriage will change anything," Biel said. "[But] it will be a challenge finding a balance between my private life, family and work, and I'm ready."

The "Total Recall" actress went on to say that she doesn't have immediate plans to settle down and have children but welcomes the natural progression of things.

"[I'm] someone who lets things happen naturally," she said. "For me, getting married doesn't mean we should limit ourselves to some pre-defined idea. Rather, it's an opportunity to explore new things in life."

Speaking to the top three things she values most about her future husband, Biel gushed about Timberlake's personality and strong sense of character.

"[His] ability to communicate well ... to be able to express his feelings. Then loyalty. And, finally, honesty."

The couple have not made their wedding details or date public, but according to reports, they're planning a big celebration sometime this summer.
