Video: ?Insider attacks? surging in Afghanistan

>> coalition forces have been killed in insider attacks so far this year compared to four deaths in all of 2008 . today's shooting also comes a day after seven american special op forces were killed when their chopper was apparently shot down by insurgents. the taliban claimed responsibility for that attack. joining me now nbc news military analyst general barry mccaffery. thank you for your time.

>> good to be with you, tamron.

>> obviously we're talking politics from jobs to medicare. leon panetta brought up the issue the war and the men and women serving this country abroad. let me play what he had to say. i realize there are a lot of other things going on in this country that can draw our attention from the olympics to political campaigns to droughts to some of the tragedies we've seen in communities around the country. but i thought it was important to remind the american people that there is a war going on in afghanistan and that young men and women are dying in order to protect this country.

>> general, those remarks were made on tuesday and here we are again, two service members shot, killed by this afghan individual that they trained. what are your thoughts that we have to be reminded of what's happening here?

>> well, it's an unusual situation. we're probably running $8 billion a month burn rate losing a company or so killed and wounded. we got 85,000 troops in combat and we have minimal attention by either political campaign toward this war. by the way, tamron, we're involved in a retro grade operation. we're coming out of afghanistan and we should between now and 2014 . we're trying to withdraw out through pakistan. we're 800 miles from the sea. we're in a frightfully dangerous situation underscored by the fragile nature of the afghan security forces . i mean, taliban, yes or no. look, three years ago these attacks weren't taking place. as our combat forces withdraw, our troops are increasingly at risk. we're going to have to rethink the strategy of leaving trainers spread out all over afghanistan .

>> right. congressman patrick murphy , a democrat, said the military is at war and the country is not. let me get your thoughts on those words.

>> i think it's quite true. it's not just the military. it's also the cia and selected elements of national power . foreign service officers, usaid, etcetera. we're pushing 57,000 u.s. killed and wounded. a lot of the young troops, mid career officers, have five or more combat deployments. so it is an all out effort and they're doing a magnificent job, at huge risk. we need to take into account that the coming 24 months are the riskiest of the war so far.

>> right.

>> they need our support both political and financial. i don't want to drag into the political argument over who is right and who is wrong here but there is not a lot of contrast between what mitt romney is saying and what the president has said. the difference is romney has criticized the president for applying a timetable so to speak but agrees largely with the president's plan to bring the troops home from afghanistan . if these two men are to debate the war, what is the key question for both of them at this point?

>> what are you going to do to get us out of there safely and what are the probabilities your strategy will result in a viable afghan state ? by the way, i don't think that either candidate wants to talk about this operation. it's a very tricky situation. iraq arguably may make it. it has an outthroat the ocean, educated people. afghan has different circumstances. security forces that are unreliable, corrupt government, and the new strategy of local police is terrific. that's the only way you can get security is to have the local villagers protect themselves. it also is fraught with risk of renewing the civil war with even greater fervor. that's what's happening in afghanistan .

>> general barry mccaffery, thank you very much for reacting to the news of the day and of course how this issue of the war is playing or not playing in politics these days. thank you,

Even baby boomers worry about house prices | Shelter blog

The Shelter policy team has been lucky to have Mike Smith volunteering with us over the summer. Mike had a long career in finance before looking to move into a policy role, so we?ve benefited enormously from his perspective.

As news reports today show that house prices have risen at three times the rate of inflation over the last decade, Mike reflects on how his generation has benefited?but suggests that perceptions may be changing.

?Having turned fifty a year or so ago, and having lived most of my adult life in west London, I?ve attended a fair few dinner parties in my time. So the other day my mind idly turned to what the dinner table chat of the last quarter century might tell us about recent history.

Of course, after all those sticky toffee puddings and bottles of rioja, my recollections might not be entirely accurate. But I?m pretty sure that the property market in one form or another has been the top subject of conversation over the years, even surpassing my own favourite topic, the fortunes of Queens Park Rangers FC.

In the early days, it was all about ?getting a foot on the ladder?, something which my generation found relatively easy. For those in a reasonably paid job mortgages were easy to come by. After that, for many years it was about counting the gains as house prices rose. Occasionally we?d lament the one that got away, the house we nearly bought in an up and coming area, that would have doubled or tripled in value in a couple of years. Most of the time we all agreed that house prices were crazily high, but then again, once you?ve got the house you want, if you?re not about to sell it, does it really matter what it?s worth? So we were pretty relaxed when, every so often, prices fell for a year or two.

If we were relaxed then, most of us fifty-something home-owners are downright smug now, with record low interest rates on our mortgages, and house prices, in London at least, still rising faster than inflation. My generation has been pretty lucky. Perhaps that?s why housing has tended not to figure highly for my generation when polled about the most important issues facing the country. And why politicians sometimes seem to get away with soundbites and piecemeal ?initiatives? rather than coherent action plans.

But recent dinner party conversations might suggest that?s about to change. Some of our friends are getting to the stage where their children are graduating from university, getting jobs and?er? returning to their teenage bedrooms because they can?t afford anywhere else to live. The average deposit for a first-time buyer is now over ?25,000 ? and ?66,000 in London, and rents are beating record highs every month. Parents are even discouraging their children from renting a place of their own, because rents are so high that they leave little or no spare cash to save for a deposit.

Having a grown-up child back at home, perhaps even with their partner in tow, is all very well. One dad I know has loved bonding again with his recently-graduated son. But how sustainable is it? How many children and their partners can fit into the house? What if they want to start a family of their own? And what does it do for your self-esteem if you?re living with your parents when you?re in your thirties?

Questions like these are suddenly looming large for some who thought the biggest housing problem they?d face in the future was finding a reliable plumber: the housing crisis isn?t somebody else?s issue anymore. And if there is any silver lining to this housing cloud hovering over us, let?s hope it may provide the impetus we need to move our dysfunctional housing market up the political agenda.?

Israel wraps up national SMS missile alert test

Israel on Thursday wound up nationwide testing of an SMS warning system against missile attack, sending texts to mobile phones in Jerusalem and other parts of the country, a military spokeswoman said.

The five-day exercise, which began on Sunday, took place to the backdrop of mounting speculation over a possible Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facilities and a resulting Iranian counter-attack.

The army said that along with Jerusalem, Thursday's test included the Negev desert town of Arad, the northern cities of Afula and Hadera, and Upper Nazareth, a Jewish satellite of the Israeli Arab city.

A spokeswoman said that Nazareth itself, the largest Arab city in Israel, was not included in the test, with military sources explaining that when the system became fully operational it would cover all communities.

The army says the warning messages were being sent in Hebrew, Arabic, English and Russian.

They are meant to warn of an imminent missile attack by Iran or Lebanon's Hezbollah militia, which could become a reality if Israel decides to mount a military strike on nuclear facilities in Iran.

Israel believes the Islamic republic is trying to develop a military nuclear capability under the guise of its civilian programme which it says would pose an existential threat to the Jewish state.

Opponents of an Israeli attack said on Thursday that around 500 academics and retired military personnel had signed a petition calling on air force pilots to refuse to carry out a unilateral strike.

"I understand the far-reaching implications of this petition," a statement quoted one of the signatories, Tel Aviv University law professor Menachem Mautner, as saying.

"The possibility of a decision to attack Iran has been keeping me awake for weeks."

The statement warns that injury to Iranian civilians as a result of radioactive leakage from any of the targeted facilities could expose pilots to future war crimes charges.

"We issue this appeal to you out of a deep sense of concern and anxiety," the petition tells the Israeli airmen. "Our fate, our very future lies very much in your hands."

On Thursday, President Shimon Peres said Israel could not attack Iran without US help, in a television interview for his 89th birthday.

"It is clear that we can not do it alone," he said. "We can repel (an attack) but it's clear to us that we must act in concert with America, even if there are some issues of coordination and delays."

And later in the evening around 100 protesters marched in Tel Aviv denouncing any strike on Iran, an AFP photographer said.

"Enough of occupation (of Palestinian territories). No to an attack on Iran," chanted the protesters, including members of the opposition Meretz and Hadash parties.

Many protesters held up pictures of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Ehud Barak with the caption "arsonists".

A poll, meanwhile, indicated that 61 percent of Jewish Israelis opposed a raid on Iran without US support.

The survey, published by the independent Israel Democracy Institute (IDI) think-tank, also said 57 percent of respondents believed talk of a pre-emptive strike is simply a tactic designed to pressure the Americans to take more resolute action against Iran.

"Most Jewish Israelis (56 percent) remain unconvinced that Israel will attack Iran without US cooperation in the near future," it added.

The IDI said the survey of 516 respondents was conducted by the Dahaf polling institute on August 7-8 and has a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points.

In recent weeks, the Israeli press has been flooded with reports citing anonymous top officials suggesting military action against Tehran's nuclear facilities is imminent.

But US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta on Tuesday said Israel had not yet reached a decision on whether to mount an attack.

US President Barack Obama has said Washington will stop Iran from "acquiring nuclear weapons" -- a step further down the line from Israel's red line, which says Tehran must not be allowed to acquire atomic weapons capability.

There is concern in Washington that a unilateral Israeli strike may not destroy Iran's underground nuclear facilities, could spark Iranian retaliation worldwide and may drag the United States into another war in the Middle East.

THE FAMILY CONTINUES TO BE THE PRIMARY ... - Eldercare Tips

Posted on August 16, 2012 - by Nurse Virginia

Contrary to what many people think, most elderly people in the U.S. are being taken care of by a family member. When an elder has a diagnosis of Alzheimer?s disease the family usually provides about 80% of the care.

Problems resulting from this family commitment include:

  • A large financial burden, maybe due to the loss of income for the direct caregiver, or the cost of bringing a caregiver into the home.
  • The stress of now caring for a parent who was used to making the rules and providing care for the child.
  • Stress between siblings if the direct caregiver feels they are doing too much and others should do more.
  • Possible signs of exhaustion on the part of the direct caregiver.
  • Feelings of neglect on the part of other family members and possible anger or resentment at the situation.
  • Loss of sleep and privacy for the caregiver.
  • Feelings of guilt if you are not the direct hands-on caregiver.
  • Family friction over personal decisions and financial decisions.

Many times it is due to the collapse of the direct caregiver which brings the elder to a nursing community. An overly critical family member may just be a person who is feeling very guilty about their parents care and Nursing home placement. . Maintaining strong healthy family relationships is equally as important as the elder?s quality of care.

Families will go to extremes taking care of their loved ones. Nursing home placement is never the first choice. It continues to be thought of as the last resort for taking care of Mom or Dad.

7 Tips for Writing & Publishing Your First Ebook | Personal Branding ...

Writing and publishing an ebook is proven success strategy for branding yourself as an expert in your field.

Ebooks offer a significantly faster branding strategy than previous publishing options.

Although success is never guaranteed, the 7 tips that follow, however, will increase the likelihood of your personal branding success during today?s period of rapid change.

What?s changed, and what remains the same

Until recently, it could take years to locate and convince a traditional publisher that you had a sellable book idea.

Then, it wold take even more time for them to edit, produce, print, and distribute your book.

Now, however, you can get your ebook into your prospect?s hands in a fraction of a time!

Speed, however, is no substitute for planning.

Although publishing technology has rapidly changed, the fundamentals of writing and publishing success remain the same.

The trick is to write an ebook that will resonate with your prospects while simultaneously pre-selling your expertise and building your personal brand.

7 tips for writing & publishing a successful ebook

You can heighten the probability of your ebook?s success by addressing the following 7 issues before you start to write:

  1. Readers. Start by discarding the ?best-seller? mentality! Your goal is not to become a bestselling author. Your goal is much simpler: to promote your competence and expertise to your ideal readers?those you want as future clients and prospects. Traditional publishing has always been based on selling a lot of books to a lot of strangers. Your success, however, involves targeting for reader quality, not quantity. This involves creating reader personas describing your ideal readers and their information needs.
  2. Benefits. Next, make a list of how your book is going to benefit your readers. In order for your book to build your personal brand, it must help readers solve their problems or achieve their goals. It must help them increase their sales or reduce their costs. It must help them save time or increase their productivity. The more benefits you include in your book?s title, the more success you?ll enjoy.
  3. Purpose. Why do you want to write and publish an ebook? It?s not enough to say, to build my brand. You have to know exactly how you?re going to benefit from your book. The best way to do this is to prepare a mission statement for your book. Your mission statement should provide a roadmap for your career success,? describing how you will convert ebook readers to coaching and consulting clients or prospective buyers of your future information products like e-courses, special reports, or videos.
  4. Format. How are you going to organize the contents of your ebook? Format involves addressing both content and design issues. Content issues involve deciding between a step-by-step, or ?procedural,? approach versus a case study approach. You can also organize your book?s contents in terms of questions and answers, or best practices. Design issues involve choosing either a portrait, or vertical, orientation for your pages, or landscape, or horizontal, page layout. Page length also plays a role.
  5. Promotion. How are you going to promote your ebook? No matter how well your ebook turns out, quality?by itself?is no guarantee that ideal readers are going to discover it. Marketing and promotion are your responsibility! It?s up to you to bring your ebook to the attention of your ideal readers. In most cases, you?ll want to analyze your current online presence and decide if it provides the author platform you need to attract, convert, and upsell your ideal readers.
  6. Leverage. Look for ways to use your ebook to support every aspect of your career. Instead of parenthetically referring to your ebook in your personal marketing, make your ebook the core element in your personal brand. Leverage your ebook throughout your marketing and activities and keep it as fresh and updated as possible.
  7. Followup. A single ebook is seldom enough for years of personal branding success. Think of your ebook and your brand as seedlings that need to be constantly nurtured. Each new edition of your ebook, and each followup ebook, will shine more light on your brand. Accordingly, when choosing the title for your first ebook, look for a title that you can support with companion books and ebooks. Think of Jay Conrad Levinson?s 30+ years of success based on over 100 Guerrilla Marketing books!

Perspective

A lot has changed during the past three years of Author?s Corner Personal Branding Blog posts.

The fundamentals, however, remain the same. Writing a book can completely change your life, the same way it changed my life.

However, more than ever, you have to be strategic in your approach. You can?t allow yourself to be distracted by new tools and new opportunities. You must constantly focus on your readers and on your career, while learning from the success of others who have created successful brands in the past.

It?s also important to enjoy the process of watching your ideas take shape on the screen of your computer or iPhone! And, as you move forward, share your concerns, experiences, and questions below, as comments!

MHC will close Regardless of Development | Daily Business News

As follow-up to a story we posted Aug. 7, 2012 about the Clawson Mobile Home Park in Boone, North Carolina closing Oct. 4, 2012 and being sold to developers who will erect student housing, the WataugaDemocrat says the Boone Planning Commission voted in favor of the rezoning request. Developer of the 10 building, 266-unit complex, Mega Builders of Greensboro, NC agreed to specific pedestrian and traffic improvements as well as a six-foot fence and the planting of evergreen trees. While Appalachian State University?s (ASU) Vice Chancellor for Student Development Cindy Wallace said there is no need for more student housing, Frank Forde of Mega Builders disagreed, saying there will be 90% occupancy within the first year for the $25 to $30 million project. Clawson?s MHC will close regardless of whether the project is approved or not. MHProNews has learned the Boone Town Council will consider the rezoning request at its Aug 21 meeting.
